WD CAVIAR BLACK is better than Seagate Barracuda. And WD VELOCIRAPTOR is the best HDD out there right now.

If Crysis 2 was on a 120GB Kingston HyperX SSD for example and recorded onto a WD Caviar Black or VelociRaptor then I believe there won't be any lag no matter which recording software is used.

Dxtory proved best for me. Mirillis Action also good but it's raw format can't be rendered in Sony Vegas Pro:(

How can I get H.264 for dxtory?

Linkylinky, just get the JEEB build and rock away. (Command-line though.)

I'll stick with Fraps as it saves recorded video into smaller files.

That's strange, as Lagarith really is much better than Fraps' codec.

As for the guy that said Fraps isn't a codec, well - what do you think it saves files in?
If you say raw, then alright, why is it an AVI and not a .YUV, or better yet - typeless file?

That's right, it uses a codec. Not doing so would be suicide for anyone without an external HDD.

AKA like me. ;v

Also, my biggest recommendation would be to record the video using something like Lagarith or UT Video codec (actual name), and THEN encode it with x264.

I read that Fraps and Lagarith are about the same lossless video rate but Fraps does a faster job, no?

You gotta look this stuff up before you start throwin' out false information.

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/hdd- ... ,2904.html

That's average write the most important stat when looking at frame capturing. I record from a SSD to a HDD in RAID 0 config and there's still lag, there's always lag when capturing HD footage at a high resolution.

Mirillis Action records to compressed formats. When I used it, there was no lossless recording.

It may seem like I'm attacking you on these forums, but I'm not.

Crazy tested it and said that it was really awesome in crysis2. I will get him here later.

What part of the PC is it you need to upgrade so your PC can handle Fraps?

Most people say you need a separate drive, preferably an SSD.

I use dxtorry now. My hardware got a boost of 5 - 10 fps in game while still recording in 50fps. Quality wise it's very comparable to fraps and yes I've used fraps for about 4 years.

Oh, and here's what you lose with YV12/YUV420/whatever:

RGB:
Image

YV12:
Image

Raw sizes @ 30 FPS (these are huge I tell you):

RGB: 5626 Kb/s
YV12: 2813 Kb/s

Lagarith RGB (static image FYI): 1034 Kb/s
Lag YV12: 772 Kb/s

Comparing "quality" of different programs of such type is silly, unless they're lossy.
With lossless ones, it's usually the colorspace conversions that degrade quality.

And as you can see with this extreme example (low resolution, vivid colors)
It's about non-existent, and your HDD will thank you for the extra space savings.

But yeah, Lagarith has for some reason been pretty slow for me as of late. .-.
Back in the day it encoded 800x600 at around 54 FPS, and was limited by I/O.

Now it encodes 640x480 @ 74 FPS, and is limited by CPU.
Guess silly Crysis 2 and noise filters+dithering.

I'm testing Dxtory right now, good news is I can record at playable framerates (a real challenge for my Core 2 Duo E8400), but audio is out of sync, both with Lagarith and with Dxtory codec, both at the lowest quality. Any ideas?
